Date: November of 1992
Location: Kaden's mothers home, Arlington Mass.
Clare was baking biscuits, just like she had done every morning since Kaden came home. Her daughter, nearly 13 now but still looking like a little girl, would wander into the kitchen for breakfast. Mother and daughter would eat together. Clare didn't allow Kaden on the bus anymore. The kids teased her, called her crazy and Clare just wouldn't stand for it. Kaden had protested saying she could handle it but there was no arguing, so Clare would eat with her and then drive her to school, and Kaden's father would pick her up in the afternoon. It had taken some doing but neither parents was willing to let anything more happen to their little girl.
So Clare was baking biscuits and Kaden strolled into the kitchen, still in her pajamas.
"What's this, you've got to get dressed!"
"Something's not right, I don't feel so good." Kaden's mom wandered over and pushed her hand to her daughters forehead "You're pretty warm, take your temperature." Five minutes later Kaden was tucked under a blanket on the couch with two tylenol and a glass of water and Clare was on the phone with the school.
"Kaden Shea has a fever, she's not coming in today... If she's better sure... Well if she's not I'll take her to the doctor of course. Anyway can you send her work home? Jen from her math class can drop it off." Clare hung up the phone and sat down next to her daughter. "I guess its a good thing I'm working from home today huh?" she said as she curled up. Kaden leaned her head into her mother's shoulder and fell asleep.
