I had my first day of actual interning stuff today. Staff meeting from 10-11:30, meeting at the housing development learning center from 12 - 12:40, meeting at a middle school from 1-2, meeting at an elementary school from 2-3. I have 2 meetings scheduled for thursday and one for wednesday, and then I have to get myself over to both of the clinic sites to figure out where my mailbox and voice mail are. I now have a keychain for work that contains 7 keys to get me into all the various buildings I will need to be in. Myself and the other intern feel completely overwhelmed and confused. Fortunately we have the wonderful supervisor who is going to keep us sane, at least we hope. Tomorrow is my on campus day. 3 hour class in the morning and then I have a 5 hour work shift after lunch. Ugh.
I'm exhausted after today's run around but I feel like I already learned lots of useful stuff. I sat in while the supervisor and the guidance people from the school were discussing cases. (The site that I intern at provides counseling services to kids who the school and/or family determines need more help than the guidance people can give. We do this at the school thus making it easier for them to get to their appointments). One particular girl they said would need to see a clinician and not an intern, and then they went into the reasons why and it was really interesting to hear what had to be considered in determining who the interns should see. It's not just about who is hardest to work with, its about who will need multiple years of help vs. a few weeks, and what gender therapist is best for them and a host of other things.
DUDE! I HAVE CHOCOLATE IN THE FRIDGE THAT I FORGOT ABOUT!
erm... so anyway I feel very physically tired but I'm really energized by this internship. It is actual meaningful work, and the day absolutely flew by.
