A few weeks back [livejournal.com profile] ringoffire75 gave me a mix CD ("a mix tape! he made a mix tape! He was thinking of me which shows he caaaaaares!" - Avenue Q) with the warning "there's stuff on there you're gonna hate." Track one on the CD is "Shiver" by Coldplay which is a long time favorite of mine. I think I listened to that song about 8 times that day. Upon telling [livejournal.com profile] ringoffire75 he replied, shocked "I figured that was one of the songs you'd listen to once and then skip every time." Myself, I was shocked that there was any Coldplay on the CD because I was under the impression that people who actually care about music universally hate the band. This alerted me to a phenomenon I suppose I've been seeing for years: Even though Coldplay is one of the most popular bands in the world, people who listen to them often think no one else does. I can recall being privy to many conversations about how awful and pretentious they are, about Chris Martin's whiny voice blah blah blah and keeping my mouth shut about how I actually rather enjoy them, I don't find them pretentious, I LIKE the lyrics and I think Chris Martin has a lovely voice and excellent vocal control. Its just not cool to admit you like these guys.

Well, I'm not cool. Never have been. So sometimes, not all the time but sometimes, I listen to Coldplay and enjoy it. I do NOT think they are the greatest crime unleashed upon the musical world as many people are fond of saying. It kinda makes me sick when I hear stuff like that because dude are you ACTUALLY trying to tell me that a few british guys who can play their instruments decently well and write nice melodies which HAPPEN to have a lot of commercial appeal are doing more to damage music that 300000000 identical pre-packaged teeny boppers topping the charts? One time I heard someone claim that a cell phone ring tone was musically better than Coldplay. Now we're just getting stupid and high on ourselves for hating what other people like.

Coldplay, not the best band ever, not my favorite, but pretty good darn it!
