Music technology question

I have a lot of stuff on tape from when I was in high school, and I am realizing that soon it will be impossible to find tape players, and car stereos don't really include them anymore. Some of my favorite music is on those tapes and my method up till now of finding MP3s on limewire to duplicate the tape collection is frankly slow going... I am wondering what would be involved in converting tapes to digital format. Does anyone know anything about doing this? How is it done; can it be done?
