Subtitle for this entry: I unleash my secret inner hipster.

I have been accused of being a music snob and I suppose there's good reason for that what with my general disdain for mainstream music. However, I actually listen to the radio every day and there's a lot of stuff out there that I enjoy. Today I'm highlighting a couple of bands who have made it relatively big in the US mainstream market that I really like.

I got interested in Silversun Pickups when I heard them on WFNX about a year and a half ago. I picked up their album Carnavas a little less than a year ago based on the one song which was, by then, ridiculously overplayed. That song is "Lazy Eye" and a lot of you have probably heard it. I was worried it would be the only good track on the album, but the whole thing is quite good. I describe it as "Imagine Smashing Pumpkins without Billy Corgan's ego to ruin everything and also the music is a lot better." Here's an acoustic performance of "Future Foe Scenarios" in a record store. Yeah I know. Hipster cliche. Listen to the damn song you!

And now for a stylin video for their single "Well Thought Out Twinkles" cause all the live footage is terrible.

Death Cab for Cutie. They've been around forever but I'm slow on the uptake. I'm not sure why I like them so much, but I can't seem to stop listening to Plans. Ben Gibbard has a great singing voice, I love their lyrics... get out your kleenex guys, here's "Brothers on a Hotel Bed" (on a lousy cameraphone but tear jerking nonetheless)

*sniff* okay that was a little depressing. This is peppier, if not actually any more cheerful: "Crooked Teeth"
