Since the russian government has decided to hate on LJ or some such, I figure I should back up my journal. I know there are instructions on how to transfer everything over to dreamwidth and I have an invite to make an account there. Does anyone have a link to the instructions?

A few years ago I bought an album. It instantly went into heavy rotation in my car and in my house. Sometimes I'd listen to it back to back to back all day. Then, somehow, I lost the CD.

Yesterday I decided to bite the bullet and purchase it again off itunes. Once again I found myself listening to it over and over. I haven't really put anything else on since the download finished.

The album in question is "Winter Pays for Summer" - the second solo album by Glen Phillips, better known as the frontman of Toad The Wet Sprocket. Toad was one of my favorite bands in high school and college. I saw them live just in time; the band split a few months after that concert (though rumour has it they are touring again but not releasing new music, they just tour with their old stuff). Glen has put out 4 solo recordings. I have three of them and am trying to locate the fourth. Even if I find it, I doubt it will usurp "Winter... " as my favorite. Its one of a handful of recordings that invariably instigates a good mood. Much like SJ Tucker's "Mischief" and Patrick Wolf's "The Bachelor" it seems to restore my sense of faith in humanity. Here for your perusal are a couple of videos. The first is my favorite song off the album: "Cleareyed" - this is the album version with a montage video because I could not find a decent live performance

And now a live performance of "Thankful" - no embedding allowed so click the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDoms_25Qc0

For those who care, the man's geek cred is undeniable; he wrote an EP about space travel which, if I am not mistaken, suggests sex in a space elevator.

The story and words are hers, but I do believe that it needs to go viral and that as many people as possible need to get their stories out there. Only by making a noise about this can we make a change in our society.)

There is a move afoot in the nation -driven by the GOP - to repeal the new health care laws, to protect corporate interests, to defend against fear-mongering (and stupid) cries of "socialism!", and to ensure that people are forced to choose between keeping a roof over their heads or getting necessary health care.

This movement is killing people.

Think I'm overstating the fact?

Ask the friends and family of writer/reviewer Melissa Mia Hall, who died of a heart attack last week because she was so terrified of medical bills, she didn't go see a doctor who could have saved her life.

From another writer friend: One person. Not the only one. That could have been me. Yeah, I have access to insurance -- I live in New York City, which is freelancer-friendly, and have access to freelancer advocacy groups. Through them, I can pay over $400/month ($5,760/year) as a single, healthy woman, so that if I go to the hospital I'm not driven to bankruptcy. But a doctor's appointment - a routine physical - can still cost me several hundred dollars each visit. So unless something's terribly wrong? I won't go.

My husband worked for the government for 30 years. We have government employee (retired) insurance. It is the only thing of value he took away from that job. His pension is pitiful. He still works part time. My writing income has diminished drastically. Our combined income is now less than what it was before T retired fifteen years ago. Inflation has diminished it further. In the last 30 days I have racked up over $8000 in medical bills for tests and the beginning of treatment. Our co-pay is 20% after the deductible. And there is more to come. Our savings are already gone. I have the gold standard of insurance and I still can't pay all the medical bills.

Another friend lost her insurance when her husband lost his job. She couldn't afford medication and ended up bed ridden for three months at the end of over a year of no job and therefore no insurance until he found work again.

It's our responsibility. All of us, together. As a nation.

EtA: Nobody is trying to put insurance companies out of business. They will always be able to offer a better plan for a premium. We simply want to ensure that every citizen - from infant to senior citizen - doesn't have to choose between medical care, and keeping a roof over their heads, or having enough to eat.

We're trying to get this to go viral. Pass it along.

I'm going to post my story as the first comment to this post if anyone would like to read it. If anyone wants to tell their story, please tell it on your own journal and post a link in the comments. Maybe, just maybe, TPTB will listen to the slaves peons who clean their toilets before they have to clean their own.

[livejournal.com profile] yuki_onna has a new book out today, Habitation of the Blessed. Its her take on the Prester John myth and its probably really good (I haven't read it yet, its on my list) and you should totally buy it if you enjoy mythology and fairy tales and medievilness but there's another reason I am posting about it.

You see, our lovely author realized that the Prester John story is little known and people might need a bit of background. So she made a video explaining the history. Using her action figures. If she weren't married already I might propose after seeing this:

My router died. Not surprising as it was a piece of shit and about 4 years old. The other really old wired router I had lying around also died. SO! Here I am plugged into the cable modem! This means my poor roommate cannot check her e-mail from home unless I unplug and she plugs in her netbook. Obviously we gotta get a new router but that might take a few days since we are never home when stores are open. Does anyone have a wireless router we could borrow for a few days that will work with some variety of windows desktop machine and an old Powerbook G4? Also, recommendations on what to buy would be fabulous.

Hey guys. I know I've been posting a lot of official TBC stuff over the last few months and it can get tiresome. Tonight I want to talk about the organization and event, no press releases, just talk.

Transcending Boundaries Inc. is a tiny non-profit whose primary purpose is putting on the conference. When I say tiny what I mean is there are maybe a dozen people working on this conference and I'm pretty sure everyone on the TBI board is among those numbers. None of us get paid a cent. In fact, none of us even get into the event for free. I paid the cost of membership as did my colleagues on the planning committee. So what you've got is 12 people paying for the privilege to work our asses off 8 months a year - a true labor of love. Its worth it because there's really nothing else like it. This is an event that creates a safe space for members of all relationship, sexuality and gender minorities. With all the talk of gay teen suicide, pathological bullying and general divisiveness plaguing humanity, we NEED spaces that are radically inclusive. We need spaces where we can talk openly about privilege issues, interactions with the medical and other professional communities, identity politics, all the stuff that everyone in any minority constantly bumps against just trying to live a normal life. I went to TBC last year and that's exactly what I found. That's why I've spent the last 8.5 months working to make it happen again. That's why I volunteered to be a department head in my first year (and also because I'm a sucker but mostly the love thing).

TBI is a small organization but TBC is a big event. We're aiming for 300 people this year. We had 200 last year. We're taking over the DCU center convention space. We're providing scholarships so people in dire financial straits can still attend, in addition to having special discounted student rates. All of this takes money and man hours. This is why I push so hard; we NEED you guys. We need people first and foremost to attend because without that, the panels are REALLY BORING ;) We need those people who are attending to volunteer, an hour here and there makes a world of difference to a staff member who needs a bathroom break! For those who can't or won't attend but still want to support our mission, we need donations and sponsorship to provide all those scholarships. For people running any type of LGBT oriented business or community organization - we need advertisers in our convention book and vendors at the event. And for all of you, we need you to spread the word! Despite constant advertising and publicity, press releases at least once a week, partnerships with pride events and other local organizations and multiple meetings open to the community, a lot of people who need us still don't even know we exist.

If you can, volunteer.
If you can, be there.
If you can't, consider donating.
If you can't donate, tell someone you know.

TBC hospitality out.

Hey everyone!

Last night was, in a word, AWESOME! For those of you who happened to glance at this blog last night, you saw me mention that the concerts and shows were going out on live feed, right?

Well, this is where it gets better. For the balance of today, right up until TONIGHT'S live feed goes out, we are leaving access to last night's broadcast up.

That's right, y'all get a replay option!
If you missed seeing Kellianna's stunning opening act; if you tuned in too late to hear [info]s00j and [info]stealthcello play the Skinny White Chick set; if you didn't get to see all of the Gypsy Nomads; or if you're stuck down at New York Comic Con, and missing Catherynne Valente more than you can bear, and would like to have a slice of her readings -- Hint; there was new stuff. Oh yes, there was! -- and S.J. Tucker's awesome songspinnings around those words -- Hint; there were new songs too!; if you missed the pasty-splosion of Rogue Burlesque...
We've got it handled for you!

You will also notice, as you click over to check out the awesome that is the live stream replay , that there is a little widget to the right of the screen, which will let you tip the artists you like and love.

Let me say it again, because I am a busker myself, and this is Relevant to my Interests: Tip the acts you enjoy. Just a bit of pocket change adds up to make the difference for a Strowler, you know. In the words of a wise man: "A little money makes the difference between an adventure, and an ordeal."

Tonight's feed will feature Kellianna at 7:00, followed by Heather Dale at 8:00, Sharon Knight at :9:00, Tricky Pixie at 10:00, and the Vagabond Vaudeville show at 11:00.

And finally, SHILL THIS POST! Oh, beloveds, let the internet ring with this ephemeral opportunity to sample our awesome!
