on the subject of my job
Jun. 11th, 2001 12:16 pmI work at the help desk at my university's computer lab. It's a work study job pretty well suited to us grad students since we can often do our reading at the desk. The gov't seems to think that this job is worth $8.50 an hour even though I do basic clerical and tech support and actually spend about half my shifts doing homework or reading e-mail. I'm not gonna argue, especially since i get a raise to $9.25 once I am officially a second year student :)
But odd things happen here. I found out we have a lego mindstorm in the lab. We also have an insane amount of children's software which is used mostly by the education school, and by bored help desk staff. By the way you should all play SpyFox.
So when I am not discovering the joy of KidPix or doing homework or checking e-mail, I often chat with my witty coworkers. In specific I am often on shift with D. D is in charge of doing a lot of the maintenance on the software library. This occaisionally results in strange things happening at desk.
Last week we got a new piece of software for something called Roamer. Roamer is a turtle shaped... device which plugs into a PC and is used with a program that teaches logo. Whatever programs you write for the onscreen program can be transfered to Roamer and Roamer will actually walk around the room like the onscreen turtle does. When D was testing the program, she and one of the network techs decided that roamer needed to pay a visit to the other network tech. This resulted in a lot of frantic logo programming while said tech was at lunch. D managed to program roamer to walk through part of the lab, turn, go into the tech office, and roll over to the network tech's desk and then play annoying beepy music. For some reason this had the entire office in hysterics.
We need to get lives.
