So some of you are aware that I took a trip to Ireland in October and that my plan to travel there started with an Irish music obsession. I love Irish music. I love traditional Irish music, I love Irish rock, I love new agey celtic stuff. I started listening to U2 when I was 6 (back when they still "felt" Irish, these days they are just generic commercial rock), Enya when I was 13. As an adult I've expanded my horizons. Here's some clips of some great Irish music.
This first one is the Saw Doctors and you can blame
mhaille for the fact that I listen to these guys. The song is called N17. N17 is a highway that runs through west Ireland. This particular video has to be at least 15 years old. I chose this performance over another option because this one is acoustic and incorporates some traditional instruments. Also for those of you who read my travel blogging, the guy I met on the streets of Galway is the one with the short brown hair and glasses playing guitar and kind of hiding behind the lead singer
Next we have some Irish punk in the form of Flogging Molly. Yes I am aware they are based out of the US. Yes I am aware that some of the band members were not born in Ireland. Nyah, so there!
I wanted to post a clip of "Kiss My Irish Ass" because its my favorite, but I couldn't find one, so we've got my second favorite "What's Left of the Flag." I love the way these guys can sound so happy and celebratory singing about such depressing stuff.
And now for something completely different, we have the performance of "Si Do Mhaimeo I" from the Celtic Woman concert. Do not ask me to translate the lyrics, I have no idea what they are. But doesn't Irish Gaelic sound lovely?
Finally, it wouldn't be St. Patricks day without some jigs and a fiddler. This is an excerpt from a Waterboys show (oh come on you all knew it was coming) where Mike (guitar) and Steve (fiddle) play a couple of jigs with special guest Sharon Shannon (accordion). This is not far from what I heard in the pubs every night in Galway:
